Budgets out to $80 low end to $97 high end. (shipping not included)

You might be able to find better deals on higher end vid cards for PCI but I went off the under $50 range in the search.

No, don't bother.

Neither will run very well, if at all, on that comptuer. Ever.

Not even an AGP slot for graphics. Save your money and build/buy a more modern pc and leave this one alone.

OOOPPPSS sorry missed the bit about running windows 7.. If he wants to keep it XP then maybe putting in another 512 stick would be okay..

Otherwise no..

Oh and BTW the cards listed were all PCI as he requested.

HAHA vista running on a single core Celeron, lol

Minimum for vista i would say is a 3ghz P4, and 1 gig of ddr400, that rig is a little bit out-dated to run the new stuff, uhh i guess you can try windows 7, it probably will work, but will be hella slow.

Could have swore I clicked the right interface.. oh well that is what I get for not having my glasses on.

An Intel 2.5 gigahertz Single-Core Celeron is a pretty slow processor.

I am selling an Athlon 4600+ Dual-Core Processor for $29. He could probably get a case and all other components he would need for another $200. I don't think it is worth it trying to upgrade his current system since it is so outdated.

RAM - Add another DDR 512MB. Go for ebay or our FS section to find second handed. Not worth getting new for this PC
According to spec, it support up to 1 GB in total.

Video card - Don't bother upgrading. you wouldn't have much increase in performance with PCI video card.

Hard drive - you could upgrade if you find yourself without enough space.

At the end, I do recommend you spending $500-600 for a new PC.

Sigh... outdated for what? Running the latest mega games? Sure.. General purpose computing? Not really. Wife had an e-machines that ran that board under XP for years until it finally died and she was more than happy with it. Now she has a dual core Athlon in that same box and even though it is way more capable than before, if I were to ask her she wouldn't notice the difference. But then again she doesn't task the thing that hard. She does household/business finances, manages her DVD collection, runs her barn management software and plays internet games on facebook.

It all depends on what the computer is to be used for. Obviously, with the design of that board it isn't the fastest thing in the world (by gamer's standards) and its expandability is rather limited. Increasing the ram to 1 gig will make things run smoother. Finding a vid card in PCI that meets win 7 requirements *might* take a bit of effort but it isn't impossible. Big ATA 100 drives are still pretty common, fairly fast in 7200 rpm flavor, and reasonably cheap.

Requirements for windows 7:

32-bit 64-bit
Processor............1 GHz 32-bit processor.......1 GHz 64-bit processor
Memory (RAM)......1 GB of RAM.....................2 GB of RAM
Graphics Card.......DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM driver model 1.0(For Aero)
HDD free space.....16 GB disk space...............20 GB disk space
Optical drive.........DVD drive (only to install from DVD/CD Media)

Understand, I'm not saying the OP needs to go out and spend a ton o cash to upgrade this thing because it is going to have a limitation.

But a useless machine? Hardly.

I know someone with a Celeron 2.7 gigahertz Socket 478 processor with 768 megabytes of RAM running at PC-2100 speeds. They are using Linux Ubuntu 8.10. The system is so slow it that you can barely watch videos on YouTube.

This is an even slower Celeron processor than the one I gave an example with. The person could upgrade their hardware to something decent for less than $250. Windows 7 is obviously going to cost them more.

ok....

well, i decided i wud stick 2 xp. Also Windows 7 RC Works fine on what it is now. Um i found all the stuff i need 4 $150. so it is just 512ram, 160GB HDD, a video card[ nvidia] i forget what series, a cheap keyboard 4 $20
