old computer ram upgrade

I NEED to upgrade the ram in an old dell optiplex gx110. I installed xp and it works great but the 192mb of ram is extremely restricting. I want to upgrade it to 1gb of ram, but i read that this computer only supports 256mb per slot and i know it only has two slots. If i did buy two 512mb sticks and it only supported 256mb sticks would they not work at all or would the computer just see 256mb? I really need to know so i can know what to buy. I think it supports pc100 sdram and pc133 (if there is an easy way to find this out please tell me this computer is too old and dell doesn't support it anymore)

Computer probably wouldn't even boot up. Your best bet is to find a better system that will support at least 2gb of memory to run xp efficiently.

I can't imagine a small amount of RAM is the only bottleneck for XP on that machine. It will more than likely still run poorly even with more RAM.

It's not worth upgrading that system. Still, a total of 512MB and a reformat of the disk and reinstallation of windows can't hurt.

I know that this computer is more or less worthless, its not my main computer i plan to use it as a itunes media server and maybe some basic web browsing. I got it from a friend who "broke it", they had put it away and had no use for it, so i took it and found the only thing wrong was a bios setting. I know there are a lot of other restrictions but a few minor upgrades and it'll do for what i want it for. and i found the ram for 5$ on amazon.

I had a dell dimension 2400 and it said online that it could only use 512mb in each of the 2 slots to = 1gb , but now other places online said 1gb in each 2 slots to = 2gb, so i put 1gb in each slot and it works and sees 2gb.

I went and looked up your computer and it saids 2 sticks of 256mb to = 512mb, still thats not bad, for small games and for going online, alot better than 192mb,lol

yeah its almost impossible to browse the web like it is, the ancient hard drive is so slow and with no ram available it can't keep up

i bought ram from amazon (i was chicken and didn't go for the 512mb) i also ordered a new processor but it hasn't come in yet
