Old computer vs new computer

I am amazed that my new computer is completely silent, whereas my eight year old computer was so loud. Is this because it was full of dust or was it noisy because of its age ? They are both Dell computers by the way.

Probably the fans on the old computer were going out and lots of dust causing fans to spin fast.

Some hard drives are also just extremely loud when reading and writing.

Depends on the parts. There were noisy components back then and there are now as well, although computing has made a lot of advances for smaller process and power consumption.

Moving parts like fans also fail over the years and generally start becoming noisy as things like bearings fail. Also if you didn't dust it out very much your computer generally runs hotter which would ramp up the fans to a higher degree.
