Old DVD-ROM drive in new comp

I have an old DVD-ROM drive in my parents' windows 98 computer. What would it take to put it in my new computer (winXP)? Would it require drivers, or would it possibly run anyway? How do I go about hooking it up once I take it out of the old computer?

Pretty much the same as hooking up a hard drive. Unplug the dvd drive form the old computer take it to you computer, plug in the molex and ide cables (make sure to have it plugged in on a different ribbon than the hard drive) then if theres already an optical drive in, change the jumper to slave. And it should work.

Aaaah, the joys of WinXP's driver pool is wonderful, no drivers will be needed, although you may need to install some kind of software to be able to watch DVD movies from the drive.....

Ok, thanks. And Software, as in a media player, or something like codecs?
If you dont have a DVD Decoder then you will need to get one, for some reason windows doesnt come with one. You can find loads of them on download.com.

I searched, but none of them said specifically "DVD decoder." If you could get me a link I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

DVD Decoder? U mean some sort of DVD Player to watch movies? I suggest you look at either the Ulead DVD Player (which can also burn DVDs) or the Intervideo WinDVD Player, both of which are awesome. I am not sure about free ones but my one came with the DVD Drive itself. Anyway these are the sites for Ulead and Intervideo respectively:
http://www.ulead.com/dmf/runme.htm
http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/WinDVD_Profile.jsp

And btw, u might like to try http://www.download.com or even the good old Google search in an attempt to find a free DVD Decoder.

Good Luck!

icemakr's Advice is descent but I am not sure whether this works for all PCs. Like I tried it on mine and then abt 20 seconds later a message comes up - An error has occurred and Windows Media Player must shut down. SO ANNOYING!!! <<I only use Media Player for MP3s and general video files (also for VCDs). It is true that Media Player wd provide you with much better sound quality than both Ulead and Intervideo, especially if u have DFX Audio Enhancement Plugin installed. Anyways, its definately worth a try to get Windows Media Player to do the job.
