old laptop needs new (used) battery

I have an old HP pavilion ze4300 laptop. I just want to use it for very basic purposes. I think it is a 2003ish model (it came with Windows XP SP1) There are two main issues:

First, the battery doesn’t work anymore. Extended overheating from an attempt to play one of the old age of empires games several years ago probably caused it. I don’t know if it is just the battery, or the battery connection, etc.

Also, due to some dust exposure, the keyboard completely failed. It has been replaced, but the touchpad buttons are not very responsive now. (They do work correctly when they work, unlike the keyboard, which behaved erratically.) It may be possible to clean it, but I don't know how to get to it. It doesn't really look dusty and cleaning did nothing to help the keyboard. (The touchpad itself is fine.)

Everything else seems to work all right. I would like to know if anyone knows where I could get some used parts to fix it for incredibly little money, and what to do about the touchpad buttons.

Any suggestions?

The dust happened long after the overheating and is completely unrelated.

Your best bet would be to save your money and get a new laptop. You would be better off buying an original battery for it and they wouldn't be cheap, over $100. So your best bet now would be to save money for a new laptop.

So there isn't really a good way to get a decent used battery (around 50% life left) for near the price of shipping? I only need a laptop on very rare occasions.

Is there any easy way to verify whether it's just the battery? (It seems I read somewhere about the battery connections (not sure of the technical term) being susceptible to heat as well. If that's gone bad, then I don't think it's worth fixing.)

Well, if it was me, I wouldn't put anymore money into this and just save up for a new one or newer one that someone is selling.
