old monitor smokes and sparks

I got an old 14in monitor from a guy who died, and when I plugged it in and turned it on, nothing happened except that the light went on. WHen I plugged in the D-sub, the monitor started smoking and sparking from the little black box in the middle of this picture. (the one connected to the red wire that conects to the suction cup on the picture tube.) What is this, and is there any way I can fix it? I don't need to use the monitor, I just love to learn things.

You really shouldnt be opening monitors up and messing around with it, there are tens of thousands of volts inside.

Im not sure what that is, im sure whatever it is would be hard to find, and you may be better off buying a used one online or something.

I don't want a another monitor, I have too many sitting around as it is. All I want to do is learn stuff.

Fixing monitors is something only certain people can do, if its not to damaged. When they fail theres hardly a chance that they can be fixed.

well, part of the electron gun, there's a little heater coil in there that is virtually identical to a value transistor.
