Old Motherboard and SATA

Hello all.
I have an Abit IC7-G motherboard (old, I know) with onboard SATA I. My question is what will this support? Will it only support the original SATA I drives, or is there a way for it to support SATA II drives?
 
Sata 3.0 drives will run on it. They are backward compatible. If it has a problem with your chipset most drives have a jumper that will force it in 1.5 mode.
 
So both Optical and Hard Drives will work with them?

Also, my motherboard has an AGP Pro 4X/8X Slot. Will that slot also support non-Pro AGP 4X/8X cards?

No. AGP has a different slot style. It is not compatible with PCI or PCI-E.

Optical and Hard Drives should work fine though.
 
My bad. I meant will the AGP Pro slot work with regular AGP cards that aren't Pro. My fault for the misunderstanding.

This was a rarely-used slot for cards that required more electrical power. It is a longer slot with additional pins for that purpose. AGP Pro cards were usually workstation-class cards used to accelerate professional computer-aided design applications employed in the fields of architecture, machining, engineering, simulations, and similar fields.

See no reason the ROM should not work on a older SATA 1.5 board.

What ComputerGuru64x2 said was wrong, yes a regular 4/8 AGP card will work on a Pro slot. You just cant put a Pro card in a regular 4/8 AGP slot.

So...the hard drives will work, but the CD/DVD drives won't? That is what I pick up from your previous response.
 
No, both will work. My fault, I added to the post, I see no reason it should (not) work.

Just wanted to clarify something. I though what Gregory ment was that he wanted to know if a non AGP card could fit with a AGP Slot. Any AGP 4x/8x can fit in a AGP Pro slot. Sorry for the mis-communication. I typed the post up after he typed in the next post.

My mother board went out on me. I have an Emachines Desktop. If I purchase a new motherboard online, what type should I buy and how will I know if it will be compatiable with my Emachines destop PC. I have an Altlom processor running Windows 2000. I have quoted the price of a new one that comes from the Emachines manufactor. Would it be better to buy the product through the manufactor or an online retailer such as egg.com?

You are better off saving your money and getting a new system built for you. You just can't buy a motherboard and put it into an OEM machine. Most likely the motherboard connectors for the front panel and usb won't match up to the motherboard. Even if you buy a motherboard from Emachines you will be spending around $100, for around $300-$350 you can build a decent system as long as you aren't gaming.
