could i upgrade my old regular P4, 2 like a P4 NT, or w.e it is? but my mobo only supports up 2 2gig, i think.
 
Ok, I think you mean, could I upgrade your 1.5Ghz P4 to a Pentium 4 w/ Hyper Threading, and your motherboard supports 2Ghz. Is that right?
 
Your mobo only supports up to 2 GHz because it's socket 423. Regardless of electrical design they only produced CPU's up to 2 GHz for socket 423, so thats your upgrade limit with your current mobo.
 
I'm not sure why it wont support over 2 GHz then. Are you sure its socket 478? Check with CPU-Z, if you haven't already.
 
I found the maximum CPU on some website for JP before he got the computer. It said something like Dell Optiplex GX240 1.5GHz-2.0GHz.
 
alright, i went on Dell Upgrdes, put in my model, and the processor upgrade is a 2.8GHZ? guess thats what it supports.

I guess it should work then. $219 seems a bit pricy though for an OEM chip. I would try to find it somewhere else.
 
yeahh, $219 does seem high, when i get money i'll look 4 another CPU, 2.8GHZ, but it will support 2.8 right?
 
damnnn, i was either going 2 upgrade the CPU 2 a 2.8GHZ HT (if i can get that, dont know what the differnce is between P4, and P4 HT.), or see if a GX260 mobo would fit in here, then i could upgrade 2 like a 3.6GHZ.

Pentium 4 with Hyper Threading acts like a dual-core. It has one physical core and one "virtual" core, but it's not a dual-core because it doesn't have two physical cores. The Pentium 4 without Hyper Threading doesn't have the extra virtual core.

A HT CPU might not work. As long as the motherboard is the same form factor as the case, it should fit.
