Old pal pulled up and out from the basement...

So my first computer has a processor called a "Cyrix 6x86". I'm pretty sure it's very old and outdated... It's only got about a 4 GB hard drive and operates at yes, 199 MHz. My questions are: Would a new hard drive fit in this old baby? Can i get more RAM to speed it up? and how can i get it to operate at say... 2 GHz? i'm very interested in reviving this computer.

obviously it's a piece... but i don't wanna waste it. i like customizing stuff. I'd like better responses than that, please.

Serial and parallel connectors are the most advanced socket types you're going to find on that, but it should be good fun.:)

haha, it's not a joke. i'm just very bored with my life, and yes it has a USB  I'm not very computer savvy, so it's not like i'm gonna reply to smart-arse comments, i'm just wondering if it's possible to upgrade the RAM and put in a new hard drive. i want to see potential here folks. ha.

Seriusly it wouldnt be worth spending anything on it....it just would be realy slow...even if you did add more ram it would still be slow.

Your best just saving up and buying a new pc realy.

i highly doubt that ram you gave us the link to would fit that old machine...Pc3200 is what my system takes in my siggy,Also for that External hard drive you linked too,Does the old pc even have a USB port?

Yes, it has a USB port. When i took off the casing, the RAM cards that are on it right now look identical to the PC3200... I mean, i'd be spending a lot less money just buying these items rather than dropping $350+ on a new desktop.

Most ram is going to look like other ram. you're more than likely going to have to get the numbers off of the current ram to find out what it really is. BTW the Cyrix 6x86 is the CPU being used and not the computer itself.

Brief history:
Cyrix 6x86 processor is a x86 compatible superscalar microprocessor with 64-bit internal architecture, 80-bit Floating Point Unit, 16 KB write-back cache, speculative execution, branch prediction and other advanced features.

There were three different versions of the 6x86 CPU:

6x86 - Original single-voltage version.
6X86L - Low-power version of 6x86 CPU with split core and I/O voltage.
6x86MX - 6x86 microprocessor with advanced MMX instruction set, split core and I/O voltage and larger level 1 cache.
All Cyrix 6x86 processors used Pentium Rating

That technology is older than the current PC i;m using (see sig) and you would be VERY lucky to get Win98 to run on it.

You will not be able to use that ram. I doubt that your system would be able to have more than 128mb of ram. You cannot get that to run at 2ghz. It would run unstable. The highest you could get it to run at would probaly be about 250mhz.

That RAM is probably way too fast for the motherboard. And the hard drive might work, but really, you're better off spending $400 on a new low end computer for the same cost that it would be to get this computer functioning at anything close to a modern level.

I was just cleaning out my garage and came across an old Tandy that's been out there in a box forever, complete, keyboard, monitor, software, everything, took it and gave it to the goodwill store, and I believe they chunked it in thier dumpster ;)
Yours might make a good boat ancor, can't think of any other use for it than that.

Just on a side note,
I have an emachines that has windows 98, 400MHz with 256 ram, 120 Gig hard drive, and even it I won't be putting any $ into.
It's getting about uselesss, nobody supports anything with 98 anymore, so if you use it on the web, then the security programs, like Zonealarm, pester you to death to upgrade and then won't let you, Eudora no longer works with it, no more Microsoft upgrades....
I mean there are a few things you can do with it, but putting money into it isn't one of the logical ones.

Alright, i'm curious if this RAM card could be installed:

From what i've taken apart on the computer, it looks like it would work, but i'm not sure if it's fully compatible.

And also, could this take the place/solve the problem of the loud/crappy hard drive it's got?

Any help is good

The 1st link odesnt work. But the seonond link is an external HD that connects via usb 1.1 or 2.0, its not an internal, so if your looking for an internal then no, it wount work.

Like some people told you in the first and second page of this thread, isn't worth inverting anything on it, since anything you invert will cost more than the computer you got

the link to the ram does work, and no it will prolly not work, your best bet is to get on ebay, of course after pulling ur ram and seeing the specs on it and then looking on ebay, and if that computer has ide, u could maybe find a cheap 20gb on ebay, and the specs to run win 98 arent high at all, so im sure it would work on it, that is if it has a cd drive lol
