Old programs with Vista 64bit

I am considering purchasing a new laptop. Every machine I review now comes preloaded with Vista 64bit OS. I have heard in the past that older programs don't always run well in a 64bit OS. I have some apps that go back to Windows 3.1 if you can believe it, which still work great and have never been updated and are no longer available. Will I likely have problems getting them to work with this version of Vista?

Also, as an aside, how do I get rid of the "craplets" the laptop will come with. I have built my last 3 desktop computers, so I haven't had to deal with the junk that comes preloaded on a computer in the past.

Its worth a try to see if they work, Vista does not even have Windows 3.1 compatibility mode, but if it runs in Windows 95 compatibility mode, then it may work? Just out of curiosity, what programmes do you have which came out on Windows 3.1?
 
I have an old version of Avery LabelPro, which I still use for making lots of labels. It works great, and it has all the templates the Avery labels I use. I also have an old word processing program called Nota Bene which was designed for use by critical writers with lots of aid in creating bibliographies and footnotes (which my wife still uses and needs). I would hate to give either of them up.
