Old System problem

Can someone on here please tell me how to speed up my old system. The mother board is a Asus P4P800 I think, Pentium 4 CPU 2.66 Ghz, 3 Gigs of memory, 80 gig hard drive, video card is a GeForce FX5500. I just put in 2 gig of memory and tell you the truth I see no difference at all, I have tried over clocking and that helps a little but then after about a hour it starts freezing up and then I set it back to 2.66.
Is there anything that can be done to this heap?
Thanks everyone.

No difference when you upgraded with more RAM ? I find that hardly to belive, actually. Are you sure that your new memory sticks are working as they should, oterwise fix them. You can also upgrade your HDD and gpu even if this don't make your system alot faster, I upgraded my old computer from P4 (2,6 ghz) to P4 (3,0 ghz) and that made much bigger difference than i expeceted. Hope my advice wasn't to useless. PS. my english isn't exactly top of the line but I swedish and 15 years old, hope you guys will be indulgent with this. xD

Hi there any advice at all is appreciated. first off how can I check to see if the memory I just put in is working? It says in device manager that there is 3.0 gig installed.
Thanks again.

you can't really feel the difference unless the computer feels that it needs that extra ram. most often a cpu upgrade will cause more difference than a ram upgrade.

right click your my computer and check the properties, it'll say how much ram it sees.

overall, a cpu upgrade is more noticeable than a ram upgrade.

Hell, you have better English than of the people I know living here in the US...

You could always reformat as well. It will help clear junk that has piled up over the years and get the system back to about how it was when you first started using it.
