Old Video Card......

OK....let's preface. I used to know quite a bit about computers (building, code, etc.) back in 1995. I was very good with DOS. The oldest system I put together was an 8086. The newest computer I have worked on was a Pentium (single core). We're talking very minor stuff here. In other words....I don't know nothin' anymore.

What I have here is a store bought HP. I needed something fast and cheap so I got a bottom of the line Quad Core AMD Phenom II 840T. Hey...it works for online. But my boy wants a little more in terms of gaming. If I can give that to him with what I have already got, great.

What I have is (what I presume to be a POS) ATI Radeon HD 4200. Yes...the evil integrated setup.

The old video card is an ATI Radeon X800GTO (256MB?). Pretty sure on the memory. The dude who sold me the system told me it was 512, but I am having my doubts.

Question is.......which is better? The POS newer integrated graphics card or the older (presumably 256MB), X800GTO?

Any input would be appreciated.

Eventually, I am going to put together a good system (newegg action), but for now, I wanna see what I can do with what I have.

Thank you in advance. I am appreciative.

WEll, i do know you can get a GOOD graphics card early, put it in that system, then when you upgrade(newegg style), you can use the same card.. :) ...

Like a cheaper card being the
GTS 450 GTX 460
While the nice ones...

560-580...and...hd6850-6990(which is VERY pricy.. :)

Given the choice.....I would go with the 6950. I have had my eye on that one for a bit. The 6990 would be overkill for my needs. LOL...the 6950 would probably be overkill as well, but better over than under....

Anyway.....I don't want to put any more money into this system for the time being. When my other crashed, I dropped $500 for this tower and called it good. The wifey was accepting of the need for a basic computer and greatful that I didn't go double live gonzo and spring for something we really don't need at this time.

If we want to game, the 360 will have to do.

So if there would be any improvement with the original idea, I would like to hear it....and even if there isn't, that would be valueable information as well.

What is the dedicated memory of the integrated 4200?? 256MB?
Also, I dont think the X800GTO had over 256MB...It had 128MB and 256MB...

Ive done some looking around, and for the little time I had, I think the Integrated HD 4200is actually better than the X800GTO...that card is soo old, th newer chipsets are now better.. :)

Being the X800GTO, not really for sure. If it was the X800XT its definitely faster then the HD 4200. Best thing to do, try testing both and see what happens.
