Older Computer Hard Drive Failure

Hey guys. I have an older computer I am working on, and the hard drive is failing. I would like to clone some of it to another hard drive, but I first am figuring I would need to get another older hard drive first, or would it be possible to clone it to a usb and then to a newer/older hard drive?

You wouldn't be cloning, you would just be copying data over. Cloning refers to copying the whole drive over to a new bigger drive. Have you ran a disk diagnostic on it yet by running the drive manufacturers disk diagnostic program?

Nope. Because I don't want it to die on me. lol. It's freakin loud.

As long as you have capability of hooking up 2 hard drives in your system you can just buy a new drive and install windows to it and then hook up the old drive and copy whatever data over you need.

It then says that I need administrator access though for somethings.

Atleast in the new system/hard drive I am trying to put it on.

Sounds like you need to take ownership of the folders that you are trying to copy from. What operating system are you using? If its XP, look here on how to take ownership.

It was an XP system, and I'm trying to transfer it over to a windows 7 system.

All fixed. . Just used a Seagate tool and it worked flawlessly.

I think you should create a backup of your files then replace your old hardisk.
