Older Laptop.. Battery Issue?

Ive got an older Dell laptop (3yrs old) that has never had anything replaced on it. Normally, this unit stays plugged in, but I have noticed that once unplugged the battery drain is quick.

Recently, a notice has started coming up saying that the battery needs to be replaced. I've noticed that the computer seems to be slowed now as well.

Since this laptop is normally plugged in, how crucial is the replacement of this battery? And is the slowing caused by a program of some sort by dell? If it is a program, is there a way around it?

Only reason I ask this is because I do know that some Dell computers have a type of program that slows the computer if an aftermarket power adapter is plugged in.

Thanks for the input..

By having the laptop plugged in all the time you have ruined the life of the battery. You need to buy a dell replacement battery and hope you haven't ruined anything electronic in the laptop itself. Some people will say there is nothing wrong with keeping the laptop plugged in all the time. However, I've seen way too many laptop batteries and laptops themselves ruined by keeping them plugged in 24/7.

So do I. My dad has a Sony Vaio that he ran with the battery in all the time, eventually it killed the battery (only held a charge for a few minutes, then not at all) and eventually some of the circuitry on the mainboard died due to excessive heat.
