Ok, i know this may sound an odd question but it seems like no-one i know seems to trust me on a computer, although i have never done anything like broke on to make them not believe me, basically what i am wondering is do older people not trust younger, and more computer literate people?
for example i was at my mums friends house fixing her laptop, that was absolutely full to the brim with spyware due to IE. i got rid of all the spyware and then told her that she should really use firefox instead of internet explorer, as it is a bit faster and so much more secure, she basically looked at me as if i had said she was going to die, and replied with
well, i have never had any problems with IE before so why should i switch, i'll keep it on there, i don't trust these free programs, they'll probably make my computer even worse

I just thought i should be polite and said nothing about it, but it has made me wonder, do older people not trust younger people?

Has this ever happened to anyone before, or do you agree with me

older people find it harder to learn new things... so when someone says that something they like and are used to using it crap they wont believe you... simple

Yea, My dads the same way.

It must be a thing with dads, my dad is the same. whenever i open my computer up hes always comes in and moans and says im going to break it...

right, its hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

and, firefox it not "more secure", its just not targeted by attackers.. yet. same thing goes for macs or linux.

HA! Happens to me all the time. I get my new computer parts in the mail, and when Im putting it all together both my parents wander into my room saying things like "you better know what you're doing!" or "you know, you should really have a professional do this" and crap like that... for god sake I KNOW WHAT IM DOING!

Haaaa, I heard that one a lot when I first changed my moms brake pads and rotors. I guess you can't help but say that when your cars up on 4 jacks...

it just takes time to prove to them you CAN do it, and eventually they will know you can...

lol, you already have the professional, yourself, a "proffesional" is just gonna charge you a load fo $£$££

it's good to hear i'm not the only person that everyone think's knows nothing about computers, just because the majority of the population think spyware is normal, or necessary to run your computer doesn't mean that we people that actually know about pc's are wrong :P

my mum accepts that i know a fair bit about PC's and hardware, but doesnt like me spending an awful lot on them, my dad is a complete retard, doesnt like me event ouching a PC, even on a software level, hes like be careful with that. and when the inevitable ahppens and i have to format tis always, "i told you to be careful, you dont listen". as if he is a world expert or something, he knows jack.

I know, you spend twice as much on this "professional" then you do on the parts you are putting in.

yep, definately true, my uncle once payed someone £80 just to reinstall windows, since then his hard drive broke and i replaced it for him, cost £40 but with no labour charges :( christ knows what he would have been charged to have windows reinstalled and a hard drive and the hard drive fitted, something that takes 1 hour max.

One time I got some spare sticks of memory from a friend that matched the one on my parents' old 800Mhz computer. Seeing that there were two more ram slots, I opened up the computer, snapped them in, and boom: I tripled the old comps memory. Then my mom finds out and shee yells at me for "taking her perfectly good computer apart" and thought that somehow her AOL was frozen from the upgrade (It was messed up before that anyway). Then when my dad comes home, he finds out and yells at me some more because I'm "messing with my computers that cost me hundreds of dollars." To top it off, my brother who is two years older than me, and considered the household computer specialist somehow (He earned that title from installing a joystick once) comes by and says "you know, you really don't know a thing about what you're doing... you think you do, but you'll just break the computer."

*sigh*

People are scared of what they don't know, including me. They have no idea what goes on inside the little box they plug the monitor into, and haven't any idea why things work the way they do.

Offering to open the box and do something inside of it horrifies them, because they have no idea what you will do or how it will affect them. They assume that the manufacturer is always right and the machine should not be tampered with or you will somehow break it. It'd be like opening Pandora's box to them, when it's really relatively simple to you.

My mom is this way, as is my sister. Both regularly use there computer and scream at it when something goes wrong, unknowingly screaming at themselves most of the time due to "user error" lol. My dad however knows a great deal about computers, but still prefers to use un-modified and completely stock machines. Mostly because he doesn't want any guess work involved when he has to troubleshoot a problem. Overclocking/tuning introduces many mor variables/soultions to a problem, and just makes things more complicated.

I agree with you, when i ask to work on the car or install something, my parents say "i really dont think you should", when i can easily do it. They think that if they dont know how, then i cant know how. lol

omg, that would annoy me soo much, i just can't stand it when people whi think they know better than you are clearly wrong when they simply won't accept it

This seems to be turning into a express-your-anger-at-computer-illiterates-thread

edit: this was my five hundred and fifty fifth post :P

thats the same thing with me. except my bro is younger. for some reason my mom will go to my brother if she needs help with a computer problem or doesnt know how to do somthing. And she is the one that paid for my comp and saw me build my computer!! its soo annoying. She also wanted to buy a desktop from DELL even tho i told i could build the computer and it would be much cheaper and better but noo, she insists on buying one from dell. She doesnt trust me becuase i had one minor set back on my computer, which i fixed.
And my brother doesnt kno jack about computers. his comp is soo slo and full of spyware and he doesnt even care!! He will play CSS when the his fps averages 20-30:eek: ...i cant stand 30fps cuz its soo laggy but for him its no problem.

What's "the inevitable"?
The inevitable happens every 2-3 months or so, its when i fiddle with system files that little bit too much, or install dodgy software from south korea in the wrong folder, lol. Tends to screw most things over quite majorly.
