On Access Scan Anti Spyware

I am looking for a program like windows defender that scans for spyware as you install applications. Does anyone know of any program that does that?

The one commonly used tool for detection of any new items starting on a system is a good firewall. The latest verion of Windows has the new user account control feature added that suplements the default firewall included in Vista as well as it's XP oredessor. Other programs like Grisoft's AVG free edition and a few adware/spyware removers that run scans on the system are tools to add to the overall protection.

No one program does everything however. AVG has been seen to sound an alarm when some new pest was copied to the hard drive here on occasion. The 7.5 version runs on Vista as well as XP at the moment with regular updates. You can download that free at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free

For additional adware and spyware protection Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spyware Terminator can be recommended here. These combined will outperform the Windows Defender. Ad-Aware is free at http://www.lavasoft.com with ST found free at http://www.spywareterminator.com/

Will AVG be less resource hungry unlike my Mcafee Anti Virus and how good of a job does the free edition do with detecting and cleaning.

The free edition is for home use. Grisoft's professional retail product is generally sold for large companies, corporations, and the like. It's a great program that runs quietly. Even when having it totally disabled in the services and startup group found in the msconfig utility it suddenly came to life one day when a trojan was copied to the drive during a web search. That happened however while IE 6 was still in use. Too many vulnerabilities after the amount of time since it upgraded IE 5.5 users.

It's kind of like the football phrase of stating the best defense is having a good offense. While no one program will catch everything finding a good combo like adding Ad-Aware SE Personal another freeware, and Spyware Terminator have been good here. One will often catch what the other misses. Being familiar with several strengthens your main defense however.
