onboard gpu question

I was just looking for some advice for buying a motherboard for a new build.
I was looking at this board http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX41228 but my friend told me that i would have problems with the onboard graphics getting in the way if i added a vid card later. I guess i'm wondering about how much truth there is to this. I plan on using the computer for some gaming and photo/video editing but don't know how much power i'm going to need so i was planning on only adding a card later if i needed. haven't gotten further than the psu and case so far.

Any help is greatly appreciated

There is no truth to that at all. You do not have to do anything to get a video card to work with it unless you changed teh default primary video adapter (which should be PCIe by default).

thanks for the fast reply. so i should be able to use the onboard vid for the time being and still be able to upgrade later? Is there any practical reason to get a board that doesn't have onboard gpu? I've noticed the pricepoint seems to be higher and there doesn't seem to be many available. just curious??

thanks again

the only reason to get a board that does not support video out is because of chipset support. Personally, I would only have a P67, Z77 or 990FX, and of those only the Z77 supports video output.

the onboard wont get in the way of the gpu when installed later, all you need is the drivers for the external gpu and wollah!

Which you can download from either Nvidia or AMD websites (depending on which GPU you will buy). Like other said, you won't have any problems. If you feel like buying the proper GPU later, then you have no choice, but to buy a motherboard that supports on-board graphics.

Thank you, that's exactly the answer i was hoping for. I was looking at the p67, and z77 chipsets but haven't seen the 990fx, i'll have to look into it. Probably going with the z77 though now that i can go ahead with my original plan without worries. So what's better, to get an i5 or i7 and skip the vid card or an i3 with a decent card? how capable has to onboard gotten? It seems i may have been misinformed about a couple things.

for gaming an i3 and a 7770 will be between the two and kill them for now and with the same graphics card from the i3 to the i7 (would go for i3 and a 7850 2gb if possible), there isn't a difference in most games. Although games like BF3 and other newer games have gotten to where they can use the added power and they will run better and you will be set better for the future.

and 990FX is an AMD chipset for AM3+ mobos, and really for the money an FX-6300 might be worth a look

i like the idea of the i3 and 7850 and i think i would be able to get a 7870 for the same price is there a big difference?
I have to look into that amd setup, after looking at the cpu i really have to do a bit more research, seems like a good option and i'm surprised none of my buddies told me about them.

I ended up getting a wicked deal on a asus p8z77-v le plus and an i5 3570k so i went that route. :D still haven't picked up a vid card yet but looking at doing that in the near future. just curious about the overclocking intel vs asus. i know asus software overclocks the cpu, igpu and ram and was just wondering about intel software. should this be posted in the overclocking area or maybe new builds so i can ask all kinds of different questions about my build?

Nothing wrong with having software that talks to the bios and does the commands. Believe it or not it has to interact with the BIOS :P The ASUS TurboV software that is on your motherboards software page should do the job nicely, did for me rather effortlessly.
