onboard sound not working

hi my brother built a new pc for me and he said it has onboard sound.

however when i plug my speakers into the audio jack nothing comes out. also i out ina music cd and it says i havent got a sound card installed.

can anyone help me out here?

i thought onboard sound meant plug n play
