One IDE cord
one IDE slave hdd
one IDE dvd burner

Both are able to be plugged in.

Problem is, I can only get one to work at a time. I can only get one reconized in the bios at a time, and yet I have played with jumpers. My main hdd is SATA.

Interesting, Id set it to HDD Master, DVD Slave. If that doesn't work, then id get another cable.

this is what happened to me before but i ended up scrapping the ide hdd as a external hdd and bought a new sata internal hdd. for some reason didn't help switching master and slave too

You need to set the jumper on the one at the end of the cable as master and the other as slave. If that doesnt work set them both to cable select. If that doesnt work try another IDE cable.

slave hdd doesn't have the thing that tells you were the jumpers should go, it's just trial and error. I first slaved it to get old files since it couldn't run as a master due to corrupted file errors. So I scanned, then killed a handful of trogans (and a worm) and cleaned out most system files. Thing is that I'm still a bit afraid of putting it as master.

Another piece is that the cd needs to be at the end of the cable due to the case.

I think I had it with the cd/dvd burner as master and the hdd as slave, but I can't be sure. I have two old ide hdds, I thought I could just use one as a slave and have that as a file backup for things that are too hard to use my 3 2gb flash drives for. (I'm attempting to have two of everything since I haven't been so good with that stuff in the past, with a knack for f*ing up computers.) <-- that's why even when I burn static files to disk I still need a place to put them.

I think the real problem is that I only have on IDE mobo slot. (GA-P35-DS3L) (I also have a CD burner. Until this post I hadn't considered using both hdds though if I have two slots for the cords)

I tried getting online info about the jumper slot for the slave hdd but didn't get much. He's the info (copied from the sticker)
Maxtor
model 86480D6
jumper J50
master/single On
slave off

The slave jumper is usually in the middle, if you haven't already try that. One drive disapearing like that is almost always a jumper issue.

^_^ It worked! *hands Cromewell a cookie*

Problem: I have files on it, that I'd like to keep there, but when I clicked the drive to poke though those files I was asked to format it...

Well, I was messing with that yesterday, and um... blue sparks. So I took it out and put another in (basically the same, just not haven't issues and I think a gig more or gig less that the one that needed to be reformatted.) and put its jumper were is was on the last.

So I'm assuming that the old slave that was having problems is not going to be showing me its files anytime soon.^.^;;

I suppose I am lucky that the dvd burner, psu, IDE slot, mobo and everything else all appear to be working.
