One more issue with super slow Computer

A friend of mine has a super slow computer. I have done the following:

With Registry Cleaner and Optimizer, I removed invalid entries
Ran virus scans
Made sure all op system had all updates (XP sc3)
Ran Spybot
Ran Adaware
Ran Avast
Ran Microsoft worm file
In Internet options del all cookies, file & offline files & history
Did a disk clean
Got rid of any temp files
Defragged disk
Del any non- necessary programs from startup manager
&
Have 75% of disk free space
1G memory
&
Ran all error checking under local disk property

Still take like 4 mins to boot & another 4min after you double click anything like windows explorer or Internet explorer.

Any external drives or printer connected? Another pair of items on older systems is a battery on the board itself getting weak or a simple need for a bios update. Along with cleaning up the drive did you run a disk scan to see if any bad sectors are now being seen?

Sometimes a printer will bind things up especially with an older serial or parellel type. The other thing to look at of couse would be a hardware like memory, cpu, or something on the board itself showing age.

A drive will usually start hearing some noises but not always if that has a problem like worn heads. Is the lag seen before the post tests are completed?

If the post goes normal and Windows is stalling a drive wipe and clean install would be a thought to insure a fresh start. But during the post tests generally points at something even as simple as a need to replace the battery on the board. Those fortunately only cost $2-$3 at a retail store in the battery section. A cpu on the way out or some board component will obviously be the high ticket if found to be the case.
