One problem after another!

Have put a new CPU and mobo in my dads old comp, thanks to much help on here, I have over come a lot of the issues I have had.
now I'm stuck at the final hurdle.
I've put the old mobo and cpu back in because i couldn't get the system to boot off a friends xp disk, so i thought i'd go back to the manufacturers reboot disk and reformat the hdd before trying again with the original XP disk.
Seems the comp won't register the reboot disk now.
The CD drive registers dvd's but will not read a disk with jpegs or a copied music disk.
Please help i thought this was going to be a mornings worth of work; now a week later I'm starting to wish I'd paid the difference and got one off the shelf. But that just wouldn't have given me the satisfaction...

What version of XP did you have on there before and what version was the CD that you were trying to use? Why didn't it work, was your drive not picking up the disk like with the recovery disk or did the reinstall fail?

The previous disk was XP home.
When i go into my computer the drive recognises there is a disk in there but it won't read either of them. It will read an original DVD disk.

Are you set to boot from the CD? And, if so, is the system just prompting you to insert a disc? Or, does it begin to load but stop at some point?

The hdd is master, cd is slave
in bios set to boot from cd
it begins boot from cd then in Dos says failure
when i go into my computer then open the cd drive it doesnt register any files and says the disk is empty.
Previously each drive had a seperate IDE cable.

try using 2 single ide cables as apposed to using one with a master and slave?

Is the hard drive (as the Master) on the end of the IDE cable or the connector further in? It should be on the end connector.

Also, is your OEM disc scratched at all? Can you give any further information as to the specific error you are seeing?

HDD is on the end of the IDE cable.
Disks are fine, just tried 5 seperate software disks and none of them were read. Put in two seperate DVD's which both were read.

On the initial Bios screen I have to press F1 to continue. Then it goes to
Another screen where the prompt is
Booting from ATAP I CD ROM: Failure...

After that it goes through and boots into XP as though it was starting up normally. Seems that it just cannot read a software disk.

So you are absolutely positive that it is a CD/DVD reader?
Maybe you should switch up the IDE cable, or use two separate cables, 1 for the cd and one for the hdd

It is now running on two seperate cables.
The CD drive is reading DVD's but not reading any software disks.
I'm not sure where the problem lies.

Can you try a different DVD drive in your system?
I have no idea why it wouldn't be reading software, but it will read regular dvd's...

Just reinstalled the firm ware for the drive, still no joy.
Just checked properties of cd drive with a software disk in it and it states file system unknown!
