Only using half of new memory...

I just got two sticks of 512mb RAM for my Dell Inspiron 8200. They replaced the two stock sticks of 128mb. However, it only shows that I have 512mb now. Is there a setting or something that I may need to change?

Thanks!

The place where I bought it, says that it can handle 1gig. I've seen sites where others have used this exact setup and it worked. I do not believe that is the problem.

Are both sticks of ram inserted correctly?
They should only fit in one way, unless you used alot of force to get it in their the incorrect way.

The only other thing i can think of is that it can only support 1GB of single sided memory... What is the exact model of your desktop?

That could also be the problem, I never even thought of that.

As far as the ram being inserted the correct way, I ment to say fully inserted. :P lol

its a laptop not a desktop hes talking about. i went on the dell website for your 8200 and it says it supports 1 gig. check to make sure that the ram is inserted all the way in and that it is not backwards at all.

Yes, that is very much so possible. Are there any programs to check if the ram is dead?

Well memtest 86 is a good testing program, but it won't tell you if it is dead

but try just running it with one stick, try booting with one, then the other in each slot, then both, switch them around and see what happens

Thanks for the responses everybody. I guess one of them just wasn't pushed in far enough. Out of curiosity I took both sticks out and then stuck them back in, and that did the trick!

Glad to hear it worked! :)
