Anyone using this freebie?

If so what do you think?

Buying a new pc and considering using this instead of a windows package! Good idea or not?

OpenOffice.org is a very well known free replacement for Microsoft Office. I've used it before and it is a great piece of freeware!

i dont think OOo is going to being doing email things. THere is thunderbird for email.

it works fine for the most part. Exporitng odt to doc xp format can move images around not they way you want.

Open Office works good and is faster than office 07. The only thing is Open Office is very unattractive and thats why I use Office 07. Also Oo uses a different format so all of my Office files wouldnt open with Oo.

You really have a problem opening files with OO? It can read/save as many different files types to be used with other applications. For example, OO Writer can save as Office, 97, 2k, XP, etc., and others.

I know it can but it is just complicated and frustrating.

HI,
I just recently bought a Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 laptop. It came with the Open Office Suite and XP Pro. This is my first expereice with OO. I was totally amazed at how similar it was to MS Word. So far I am very impressed. My only complaint is it is slow opening. Otherwise it seems to be a full featured word processor that is very familiar to use. Initally I was going to replace it with Office 2002. Now, I don't think I will. OO spread sheet also seems very good. For email I use Outlook Express. It's no better than adequate.

Really? I'm not trying to attack or anything, but it takes me all of 4 mouse clicks and maybe 10 seconds via the 'Save As' area. Are you doing it a different way or is it taking longer? Just seems like something would be wrong.

Yeah, I'm on the fence with Thunderbird. Of the open-source programs, it's the one I like the most, and I use it under Ubuntu, but even given my adoration for open-source, I still love Outlook. :)
