Operating System.

The Operating system is one of the most expesive parts of all.

I was wondering what would be better Windows XP or Windows XP Media Center Edition. I was also looking at newegg.com for the OEM. Is it worth buying the full-box one or the OEM.

Is it that hard to install the OEM to a home built computer?

The biggest difference that I know of between the two is the media center itself, which I'm not all that impressed with personally.

It doesn't matter if you install the retail box version or the OEM. They're both the same thing.

The OS is only expensive if you go with Windows. If you were prepaired to try Linux then you could pick a free distro such as Ubuntu.

Which is simply fabulous if you want to surf the internet, surf your harddrive and run Star Office and the Gimp. It isn't much good for anything else on the desktop..

Both myself and my partner only use Linux on our machines and haven't found it lacking in anyway.

If you are a die hard gamer then yes you need Windows but otherwise anything else can be done on Linux.

I don't want to take this thread off topic, just wanted to give another option.

Linux is great, but I dont think he is to computer savy, so unless hes young with alot of hair to pull out I dont like Linux would be the way to go!

Linux is not really like that anymore. I find I pull my hair out more ridding my parents computers of the crud they manage to accumulate, than i do struggling with my Ubuntu systems.
