welcome the the forums James, please take time to review the rules,
anyway about your question : do you have your (HP) XP cd ?
the one that comes with the PC
if not you're gonna have to buy a windows xp cd and get a proper valid cd-key.
 
ok, just pop the cd-in and when you turn on your pc, press either del or F2 to go to the BIOS , there look for the boot order and make cd-rom first.
now apply all changes and reboot.
Your pc will prompt you to press any key to boot from cd, then you're good to go !!

sombody did a system recovery and now when you turn it on a system error comes up and says invalid password update password
 
are you saying you need to enter a password to get into BIOS?
in which case a bios reset will work

or are you saying that error message comes up even if you dont enter bios? i.e. as part of windows booting
