Opinion on a refurbished hard drive

Hello all. First, I apologize if this has already be asked before, I my search skills are sub-par. The hard drive in my Tivo has died and I am going to be replacing it. I can possibly get a bigger drive than I originally had but it is refurbished.

I am wondering what you all's opinion is on refurbished drives. Do you think that they will last long and/or are reliable? If it matters, the drive in question is a Maxtor.

Thank you.

Personally I wouldn't get a refurbished drive others may say to get it but for the price of one of those your better off just getting a new one for not much more.

Thanks for you all your replies. I wasn't really sure about a refurbished drive but figured I would see what other thought before I made a decision. I ended up getting a new (although also smaller) drive. Still suits my needs though.

Theres nothing wrong with refurbished parts, its all been repaird and most of the time is better than something new beacause it is sure to work and usually hand assembled.

Over the years i have had refurbed phones to refurb hard drives, and all are "good as new"

i had to replace my seagate hard drive under warrenty and their replacements are refurbished units, sort of pissed me off. But its good as new, nothing wrong with it.

Another thing i would like to point out is most refurbished parts don't even leave the factory, it may have failed a test.. and most are cossmetic. Which i think that would mostly apply to cell phones, not much to look at on a hdd :P. The thing is most people get the impression of "refurberished" as a wore out or used.

No Im cool with most refurbished parts but with a hdd ah Id like to make sure my info is good and it's 1 think I wouldn't get refurbished.

The only bad thing about refurbished is that the warranty isn't as long as a brand new one.

Good explanation, I would not buy a refurbished part myself but each to his own.

Refurbished is a term used to describe a Computer hardware component that is not new. Because a company cannot resell a computer product as new if it has been sold and used or if the box has been opened, it must be labeled as a refurbished part and/or computer. A refurbished part or computer may have been sold to someone and returned for any of the below reasons.
  1. Computer or part was defective.
  2. Computer or part was thought of as defective and really was not.
  3. Computer or part had blemish or other flaw that was not acceptable to user.
  4. Computer or part has a missing part so the unit was sent back.
  5. User was unable to afford computer or part and had to return it.
  6. Was the wrong part or computer for user and user opened box.

I can't think of anything i really would hesitate to buy refurbished. BUT i think personally i would have an exception to a hard drive and other computer related components..

Bolded is the reason I won't buy "touchy" parts like HDDs; I wouldn't care about refurb. phone, ipod, mouses(mice:confused:)....
