Opinion on an upgrade for games

Hi, I currently have a desktop PC which I custom built nearly 2 years ago which has a 3.2 P4, 1024mb of ram, and a gefore 256mb 6600 and I currently am not abel tp play majority of games at full resolution. Whta would the best upgarde i could do keeping to a good price range, i understand i am likely going to need tro double my RAM but what about the graphics. What is the best graphics card PCI-E for around £200... which will play games such as far cry, quake, fear, battlefield at full graphical quality.. I live in uk so linsk from uk sites is ideal such as ebuyer and such like.

for 200 Pounds.. :o get a 7900GS (or GTO would be even better if its withing the budget )
that would be so much of a performance boost for that system :)
but,.. what PSU do you have? I dont know how much power a 7900GS uses.. but iirc the recomendations for a PSU were 450Watt

edit, nevermind the GS... go for a GTO :) something like This
 
Your biggest bottleneck is probably your processor. A better graphics card would help though. I don't know, I would try to do both.
 
Well I dont really want to purchase components then find in 6 months time If i want vista that I have to buy more components again. The Intel 3.4 with HT Socket LGA775, what other CPU could I get for same socket? Im sure ram and graphics would do the t0rick. Have a 580w PSU, its a Hiper one so thats fine im sure..

9th graphics card down? What you think..The less money I can sepnd would be good obviosuly,but for £200 am I going to gte a pretty darn good card?
 
For 200.00 I would think you could get something good, but not something that will last. If that makes sense. Thats why I purchased an expensive card even though I knew a whole slew of new ones where coming out. If I get a great one now it will last maybe a year were as if I get a good one it will need to be upgraded with the next generation of games. IE: utilizing and requiring much more memory and gpu speed.

It's really a personal judgement call. It just depends on how much you want to spend and when. With computers you ALWAYS can wait to buy something better, always. So it just depends on how much you want to wait.
 
Well what is vista going to require to be able to be ran full with all effects and still be able to run a current game on full. Is say a 7900gt with 1024 mb iof ram gonna do the job. Also if I have 1gb or 2gb, is their going to be any different. Currently have 1gb but it seems alot have 2gb or even more now a days...

Either a X1900XT or a 7900GTO. The next thing to upgrade after a vid card would be your memory.

Agreed, completely. I have the same graphics card as you do, and it is the main setback for the games that I am currently trying to play...
