I was thinking of getting a gaming computer that is a laptop and Ive narrowed my search down to the Asus Rog GL55JW Series http://store.asus.com/us/category/A23718?_ga=1.196199084.1221824438.1428435879
So I was wondering if this is a good all around gaming computer and what the down sides and upsides are to it and if its specs are good or not. Also if you notice when you open the link there are 2 computers there well those are the same computers basically but one is DS-71 and DS-74 so whats the differance and should I go with the DS-71 because its $200 cheaper.

If you need to run editing programs or photoshop, get the 16GB model.

Keep in mind, you could build one insane desktop for that price.

No but I really dislike desktops... because I'm on the move alot. So I've narrowed my search down to that computer i'm just not sure if its a good laptop because I never used a pc I only have used mac...

Im mainly look to run games like arma 3, and other popular shooter games and soon to come out games...

The differences between the DS-71 and the DS-74 is that the DS-74 comes included with a SSD drive and a gaming mouse, while the DS-71 doesn't. For $200 it seems that the SSD and gaming mouse are a little over priced. If you don't need the gaming mouse, I was thinking that it would be cheaper to buy the DS-71 and then purchase and install a 250 GB SSD. But, taking a look at the DS-71 manual I didn't see a way to install a second hard drive like in the DS-74. A shame, because a SSD would greatly improve the performance.

My advice:

Go with this laptop, you get more for about the same price as the DS-74.

Whats a SSD?

Whats a SSD?

Solid State Drive.

Your average 7200 RPM SATA drive with 64 MB cache has a 156 MB/s read/write speed, but a SSD has an average of 550/500 read/write speed. The difference is very noticeable in booting, accessing data, transferring files, gaming, etc..

So the one that comes with the ssd has better gaming performance basicly?

Yes.

The point of installing games on an SSD is the drastic reduction in load times, which occurs because the data transfer speed of SSDs is significantly higher than that of HDDs.

SSDs can also reduce 'hitching' in open world games. Hitching is what Intel's Adam Lake calls brief pauses in games when they can't pull assets from the hard drive fast enough to keep up with the player.
