Opinions needed for laptop

Hi all, i'm going into grade 12, and was looking to buy a laptop. I want one that will be used for a while, and need some recommendations.

I was looking into a Dell Inspiron 15r and a Lenovo T420. My laptop would be used for general things, and not for heavy demanding 3d gaming. which of these look best in your opinion?

Also, how would 4gb of ram/intel i5-2420/intel hd graphics be for general uses? should i buy ram separately and install it?
 
ok, and how would it do if i were to try a game with lower graphics req?

also, would the t420 be worth $~400 more? I want to keep money spending as low as possible :D
 
Yeah, Lenovo/IBM for sure. My dad still has an IBM T42 chugging along, uses it every day. Granted it just sits there and surfs the net, but it keeps working.
