You should go for a better CPU. Either a 9-series Dual-core Presler, or honestly an E6300 Core 2 Duo is only 185, and boards supporting it start at about 85 bucks. The graphics card will do fine, depending on the age of games you want to play. Eh, I'll let others weigh in on the rest but I would never consider building a computer TODAY with a processor that is that many generations back.

It would help others if you were to provide a budget for yourself.

No, a E6300 Core 2 Duo.
And the amd athlon 64 x2 5000+, is wery good.
They both play HL2 way to good...

Ok im gonna go with this:

CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2.2GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADA4200BVBOX

MoBo:
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

The Ghz doesn't matter nearly as much anymore. For years Intel tried to make us all believe that all that mattered was that the processor was faster. An E6300 Core 2 Duo from Intel will beat most of the Athlon X2's in most benchmarks stock vs stock. This doesn't even begin to take consideration of the massive overclockability of the E6300, or its faster brothers.

You could get an Athlon X2 4200+ for about...170 or so now I think? The E6300 has dropped down to 185 dollars now on Newegg, WAY cheap for what you get. Pair it with even a cheaper board and you're good to go.

You really need to give this forum a budget you want to look at, and there are a handful of individuals who can put together a great system for whatever budget.

For Example:

Processor: Intel E6300 Conroe - 185 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005
Motherboard: ECS P965 Core 2 Duo-ready Motherboard - 89.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135022
Memory: G-Skill DDR2-800 CAS 4 1.9-2.0v 2x512MB - 139.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231064
Video: BFG Tech GeForce 7600GT 256MB PCIe x16 - 114.99 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143049

This would be a quick setup which would excel at most things you throw at it. not necessarily the best overclocking board in the world, the graphics card is good today, and will get you through till DX10 takes over the upper-to-mainstream market, memory I'm pretty sure is a proven overclocker, and of course the E6300 is just simply awesome. Add in a 7200rpm hard drive from any of the big producers (Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate, etc), sound card if you would like, a cheap DVD burner, whatever kind of case you like - its up to you. But those 4 items are the "core" of a system, and you're only spending just over 500 bucks for something that will be good today, and not outdated for a little while yet.

Others can offer their opinions and such, but its all up to you. What's your budget? If you can afford to spend 700 bucks on this, you can grab yourself a n ATI X1900XT or something similar which will dominate games, or maybe you could move up to a 2x1GB dual channel kit from the 2x512 kit. It's all about how much you will use from your old system, or will buy new now.

I have about $700-$800 budget.

So that set up you should me would be a good one as far as the CPU and Mobo go? Im gonna get more then 1gb. EDIT: I think this mobo would be a little better for that CPU GIGABYTE GA-965G-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard

EDIT2: would this be a good PSU? Thermaltake TR2 W0070 ATX 430W Power Supply

I was just giving you an example to work from. That board is relatively cheap yet still supports conroe, just not the overclocking of a DS3 or others. Basically whatever your budget is, go for the best stuff you can get. You can even wait and see things go on sale. Like right now the 7600GT from BFG is on sale, killer deal for 115 bucks. Might be able to catch an X1800XT or a 7900gs on sale for a good deal like that before you buy.

It's really up to you lol. As long as everythign is compatible. Just do some reading. Make sure you get good ram though..it seems that Conroe boards are a bit picky about voltages and such. One reason you never have trouble with Corsair ram.

If you are planning on overclocking, I'd suggest getting some DDR2 800 memory instead of the DDR2 667 that you are planning on.

You also don't include a graphics card in that build.. like Saurian said, the 7600GT is a good deal, or another option would be the X850XT, which is a great card.

ok Heres the new ram CORSAIR XMS2 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) System Memory. Assuming that ram is good and will work i will be ready to start buying.

How much left do you have in your budget? Also post your final list so we can check it again.

Ok well I made a last minute change to an AMD. I would prefer to keep it AMD; So here is my list:

Ram:
CORSAIR XMS 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model CMX1024-3200C2

CPU:
AMD Opteron 146 Venus 2.0GHz Socket 939 Processor Model OSA146BNBOX

PSU:
Thermaltake TR2 W0070 ATX 430W Power Supply

Graphics Card:
BFG Tech BFGR76256GTOCE Geforce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card

Mobo:
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

HDD:
Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Case:
Thermaltake SOPRANO VB1000BWS Black Steel/Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Total price for all this shipped is: $757.73. Im looking to spend no more then a $100 more.

So I should go back to this:

Mobo:
GIGABYTE GA-965G-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard

CPU:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6300

and this ram:
CORSAIR XMS2 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
