opteron vs 64 x2

i dont trust the opteron for gaming.. id bet itd be hard to find a 939pin mobo for that! either way i got the 3800 as you see, and i o/ced it to 2.4ghz... i didnt even need to turn the vcore up! i get great temps and im satisfied with this product... id get it if i were you. it actually does just a TINY bit worse than the 4800+ (because of smaller cache) in sisoft sandra benchmarks.
again, i wouldnt bother with opteronnnn...

i guess it comes down to the architecture of the opteron chip, and which one is more o/cable! get a good air cooler to extend life either way.
the only real difference between the two chips is that one is athlon 64, and one is opteron, putting aside the default clocks (they can be changed quite easily)

personally i already have a the x2 3800+... but that looks like a decent alternative....

also, find a compatible motherboard supporting opteron dual core

you said the opteron is a 1-way. is the X2 3800, X2 4200,or X2 4400 also a one way or is it more?
All X2s are 1-way

You're forgetting the extra two HT Links

this is the mobo im thinking on getting. ive seen some good reviews for it and it carries both agp and pcie. it will also Cwork with the opterons or the x2. The bios would have to be flashed though
I wouldnt trust that mobo ... then agian i wouldnt trust ECS, PCChips, BIostar, etc either

yeah i wouldnt trust the motherboard either but it seems to get good reviews and it has agp and pcie. it was the only one i could find.

its one of the only combo boards like that but the neato effect isnt worth th the lifespan and reliability issues IMO

I would get the athlon64 x2for gaming, the opteron isnt good unless your using it for a server...
- Unless you're running benchmarks nonstop and not actually playing the game, you wont notice a 5fps penalty if there even is one
- You've never seen an Opteron 3GHz do gaming have you? ;)

i've seen the benchmarks and the performance of such an overclocked system is astounding.
you'll do well to find an opteron with a decent core now cos everybody's been snapping them up for their overclocking lovelyness

Yeah but most of the good early CABYE and CABNE cores have been expended and now people are getting CAB2E and CABGE.

$100 for 512K of L2 per core?

If there is nothing left to be squeezed from a chip then why not? Have you seen any comparisons between them?

I have to admit that I chose the Venice over the San Diego. Tests that I've seen, seem to show that the San Diego's have better floating point scores than the Venice cores' do.

It depends on what the $100 dollars is buying. LOL
