Optical Drive Problem

Win7. My Asus DRW24B1ST optical drive isn't reading any discs. It opens and closes fine but the drive doesn't appear in My Computer. I went to the system restore menu and it says my drive has been disconnected. I googled how to fix the problem and followed all kinds of steps and how-to's but its still not working. I don't feel like its a hardware issue since it still opens/closes fine. I installed new drivers from Asus website and have the file on my desktop but I don't know where to put it or how to update the drivers. I went into the registry and deleted upper and lower files. Don't know what else to do. Please help, thank you.
 
Look in device manager for any entries with yellow question marks on them? What operating system are you running?
 
Only see one yellow mark, under Universal Serial Bus controllers: unknown device. It also says in my task manager that there's an unknown or broken usb device that can't be recognized. I'm running Windows 7 64bit
 
I'm not sure if my drive is IDE or SATA. It's a newer drive if that means anything. Asus Sabertooth X58 motherboard
 
Can you make sure there is a sata cable securely attached to the drive and motherboard. If there was a lower/upper filter issue then the drive would still show up in device manager with a yellow question mark on it. Did the drive ever work?
 
The drive has worked perfectly until about a week now I guess. Another possible issue is that I do a lot of image mounting with MagicISO. I uninstalled and deleted the program. Huge hassle to open my pc case atm, its not readily accessible, long story, moving in 3 weeks so I planned on just holding out until then. Hoped it wasn't going to be a hardware issue since the drive itself still works. Can you explain how to update my drive's drivers? Where can I find the driver folder?
 
There is no driver to update, windows uses its own native driver for cd drives. Besides how can you update a driver if the device doesn't even show in device manager? You can't... Either the drive has failed or you have a loose sata data cable since the system doesn't recognize the device. And if you are having issues with usb its very possible that your board may be starting to fail, you may have a bad sata port. Is it plugged into the black or gray sata ports. Look in your device manager and see if you have jmicron entry under ide and ata controllers.
 
Can you post a screen shot of your device manager for me? Expand cd drives, usb, and ide and ata controllers. Post separate screen shots if you have to.
 
If one of your usb devices was having an issue, device manager would report it as so. I also don't see your cd drive listed in device manager, so at this point I'm still assuming your drive has failed or your data cable has came loose.
 
I'll check the cable when I take the computer out in a few weeks, if that's not it, i'll have to get a new drive.

There used to be a cd/dvd drive icon in the device manager, earlier today, but it disappeared.
