I need to know what is the flat out best video card to get for $140. This is the max budget at the moment, but will be upgrading to a 580/770/780 as soon as possible.

Thinking a HD6850/6870 or a GTX550ti. I think these fall in there. But I am unsure as to what would be better here.

Both the 6850 and 6870 are more powerful than the 550ti by a pretty large margin, and the 560 is $189. Unless you absolutely need it for linux, I'd go 6850 or 6870.

A 6870 cost more then 140 bucks unless its used. But a 6850 beats a GTX 550Ti anyway. The 550Ti is a pretty weak card. Or even a 6790 beats a 550Ti.

I want to run Linux on it, but I can always pick up a cheap GT210 or something to run Linux on. I do not do heavy gaming or anything on Linux.

Is a 6870 far ahead of a 6850?
And would it be worth it to look at ebay or something for a better card than a 6850 or 550? I could probably get a GTX560 on there for about this price.

What about a GTX285? Newegg has one of those, but I don't know how well it performs.

i know the 560 is about equal to the 6850 which is like 30 cheaper, but it's 170 new so those are out other than used. But the 6870 is considerably more powerful than the 6850

and the 6850 beats the 285

So for new, 6850 is the obvious winner, as for used, if you can score a 6870 that'd be great (might wanna check newegg refurbs), but i doubt you'll be able to get much better than a 6870 unless you find like a 5850+ or 470 which going by those benches about equal the 6850.

these are what I found, but I am not really looking hard. I just want something that will bench fairly well compared to a $1000 OEM machine. I would also like to be able to not have to worry weather when I buy a game if it will run it.

470 woulda been best and beast (not necessarily strongest, about = 6870, but way cheaper plus linux drivers), but it's sold, the 5850 was about equal to a 6850, so since you can get a new 6850 cheaper or some that's better, but that 6870 for 150 wouldn't be bad i guess.

I guess I will check back next week and see what is for sale then. What should I be looking for at the time to get the best performance in a 140-150 budget? Is a 470 going to be about the best I can get?

I totally forgot about him. I think 87 also just upgraded to a 580, so I might see if he is willing to part with his 560ti in this budget. I might go that way. I am not sure yet. I till got a week till payday and scrambling parts (not just computer, I had to get a ring gear, pinion, and Clutch for my K30 chevy too) that ate far into my 1500 original budget. Working off of about 450 to get up and running and 500 in upgrades next month (April).
