Opty 165 vs Athlon 4200+

I've been on various other forums and the general consensus of opinion seems to be that the Opteron 165 is the one to get rather than the Athlon 4200+ for the purpose of OCing and general gaming.

It's to go with the stuff in my sig (i mention i'm going to get the Opteron but i'm still not 100% sure) But in case my sig isn't working (don't know why it wouldn't) the other bits and pieces are:

Lanparty Ultra D
Crucial Ballistix 2x 512mb
7900gt

So if anybody could sort out my problem that would be great :)

Gaming and OCing are much alike in that they both can push hardwares. Plan on OCing? Plan on extra cooling instead of stock. Plan on serious gaming? That can also equal the same since a number of the newer games out pound on system resources as well as loading the cpu.

The Atholon 4800+ was under consideration for a new build until a look at the
Opteron dual cores caught notice here. Running a faster stock cpu with extra cooling will be the preference to see a longer life on the hardware. OCing will stress hardwares. If you are on a tight budgit and can't afford to replace any hardwares often it wouldn't be advised just for gaming. Faster memory as well
as larger can help along a faster model cpu. The Opt 185 looks good here.

The 185 is a little ahead of my price range. By quite a lot actually. It would be a nice thought but unfortunately my choice is merely between the 165 and the 4200+

Thanks for the other onfo though, very helpful

opteron is basically a higher quality athlon 64, or x2. They're made to sustain long periods of maxed out cpu usage.

optys are the same as X2s, but with a higher price tag. I forget, there was a thread about that about 2 months ago...

id get the opty... more overclockability, more cache... more stable, cheaper...
if you dont plan on overclocking though, the 4200+ will perform better with a higher default clock.

I would get the 4200+. The opterons overclocking ability is overrated.
haha... depends on the opteron stepping.
you get the best opteron stepping (CABNE something or other) 3ghz would be easy to reach... with stock cooling.

Yes they are. Btw, whats the difference between Optys and X2s? I've heard that Optys are more for servers.

thats not true,
you mean by opteron socket 940s, they are maily for servers.
however opteron socket 939s are available also as a dual core cpus.
same qulity as x2 series, and yet it can overclock well...

and, camparison between opteron 165 vs x2 4200,
4200 is bit more expensive right?
normally people compare x2 3800 vs opteron 165... in that case opteron 165 is well preferrable...

but if you compare opteron 165 with x2 4200, i'd say they are about the same.
because i already have opteron 165, i'd say go with opteron 165 though,

and it is also not true that opterons overheat...
the stock cooling can handle overclocking up to 2.5hgz easilly
it is because you don't have to raise the voltatge untill you pass about 2.5ghz.
my idle cpu temp at 2.5ghz = 35~ top 39C (when playing games)

(also keep in mind that i bought a seperate cpu fan though, only because i bought an oem version)

so it is up to you, and also the choice of your ram can affect how much cpu can perform...

in my case, i bought 2gb, 1*2 \ocz platum overclocking ram for $300 CAN...

i'll agree with you that the opterons are most definitely not overrated (although some people do get lower oc abilities depending on stepping), but I think your numbers are a tad exagerrated ;)

As said before, if you're overclocking (which I hope you will with that mobo) I'd go opteron. Couldn't you get an opty 170 for the price of a 4200+? just a thought.

if you use that mobo to oc, you'll be able to reach some great clocks quite easily.

i would probaly have to say the 4200, however it might just be that because virtuall all my computers use amd processors
The Opteron 165 IS an AMD processor.
I have the Opteron 165, it's a great processor.
Right now I have it at 2.4ghz at stock voltages.
2.4GHZ
240 FSB
9x Multiplier
Default (1.35v)
