well i just got a new gfx card from a friend who got a new one him self... and it was just my luck that i didnt have a 16xpci slot (which i had thought i had) so i was feeling pretty down. I remembered we had an older... but newer computer laying around dead and it had a 2.5ghz p4 and mine only had a 1.8ghz cpu. So i looked and found out that they were the SAME socket and i messed around with putting a cpu from a compaq into a dell. Well it took me like 10 trys but i fianlly got it to reconize the cpu... dell has a crappy bios. Now i cant get windows or linux to boot. I can get them both to the screen where the bars go across the screen but cant get any farther than that. I didnt know if i had to reinstall the os after a new cpu was put in or not.

Thanks in advance

Im confused, he said it didn't have a x16 slot but he had another computer and swaps cpu's?

The only reason why it shouldn't be booting is if you changed the motherboard and hard drive or vice versa.. just changing the cpu you don't need a new install

Right. If all you did was change the CPU, and you know the CPU is in the right socket type, you do not need to reinstall the OS.

well i decided to reinstall windows anyway

all i replaced was the cpu... i was mad that i couldnt fit in my new video card so i decided to do something dangrous like changing the cpu... and it is a dell remember so that could be the reasion it didnt work.

thanks for all your help

Is your computer working with the new processor and Windows reinstall?
