Outlook Express 6 - Cannot delete

I am using outlook express 6 on windows 98 and I am unable to delete messages using the normal delete feature. When I click on a message to highlight it and then click the delete button, nothing happens. THe same thing with the delete button on my keyboard as well as right click -> delete. If I open the message and hit the delete button, it says "THe message could not be deleted".

I am able to remove the message by holding shift + delete on my keyboard, but it avoids the deleted items folder and the recycle bin. If I have deleted an email this way, when I close OE it says

"Some of the items in the 'Deleted Items' folder could not be deleted.

An error has occurred."

upon saying OK, it closes successfully, but the deleted items folder remains empty.

thanks. Number 2 was my problem and solution, and it seems to be working fine now.
