Outlook Express

My OE on XP has developed an error. I can receive e mails ok but cannot send them. Server error 451 comes up, also some other comments.
During a previous fault I used sfc /scannow which cured it but this time no luck. Is it possible to uninstall OE without taking out XP and then put OE back in? I can order items using the supplier's order form so that works ok
I have Windows 7 dual booted on this desktop and can use the 'live essentials' e mails on there. Any comments appreciated.

You may be hard pressed to find support for Outlook Express. It is an obsolete program and not very many people use it anymore. Good luck.

Need some more information about your error code. Error 451 is a socket error but it could still be number of problems. Is there any more information related to your error.

Thanks for comments,
This is the error message I get.
An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Wednesday.', Account: 'mail.btinternet.com', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 Invalid Smtp line - Should end with CRLF', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC6A
I've checked properties. Does this help?
Outgoing mail [ SMTP ] port no 25
Incoming mail [ POP 3 ] port no 110

Incoming OK. Problem with Outgoing.

Firefrost,

SSL isnt used by BT.

You do need to tick the box "My outgoing server requires authentication".

Outgoing server is smtp.btinternet.com

Incoming is mail.btinternet.com

Username is [email protected] (dont forget the btinternet.com)

Password is password!

Hope that helps

You need to use the valid SMTP server and valid PORT number in order to be able to send messages.

Go to TOOLS -> ACCOUNTS , select your E-mail address and click PROPERTIES.Go to SERVERS tab and under the OUTGOING MAIL (SMTP) write the valid SMTP server.
Go to the ADVANCED tab and under the OUTGOING MAIL (SMTP) write the valid port number of your SMTP server.

Here are the images:

SERVERS tab:

Some SMTP servers require an authentication so if that's the case,be sure that the MY SERVER REQUIRES AUTHENTICATION check box is checked.

ADVANCED tab:

Some SMTP servers require secure connection SSL so if that's the case,be sure that the THIS SERVER REQUIRES A SECURE CONNETION (SSL) check box is checked.

SMTP server and PORT number:

If you do not know OR have an SMTP server with it's valid port number, you can use the HOTMAIL E-mail address and it's SMTP server together with it's port number:

Type: HOTMAIL (For example: [email protected])

SMTP server: smtp.live.com

Server PORT number: 587

MY SERVER REQUIRES AUTHENTICATION check box must be CHECKED

THIS SERVER REQUIRES A SECURE CONNECTION (SSL) check box must be CHECKED

Type of incoming mail server: POP3

Cheers!

Gary/Stars,
The box for authentication has been ticked for months now.
When I access , accounts, mail, properties, servers and advanced etc I get;
Incoming mail server- pop3, mail.btinternet.com port no. 110
Outgoing mail server- smtp, mail.btinternet.com port no. 25
As far as I know this has not changed for years. And now outgoing mail has failed.
User name and password is remembered and not asked for.
Should I contact btinternet to check that port 25 is correct?
I don't want to use Hotmail at the moment, would rather get OE sorted.
Thanks for the comments, firefrost.

Since OE is related to Internet Explorer, perhaps you could redownload the version you have and reinstall or repair or overwrite your present installation? That's what I would try.

Test to see if your SMTP server and it's port is valid by writing the following in Command Prompt (CMD):

telnet smtp.live.com 587

Where "smtrp.live.com" is the name of your SMTP server and "587" is the port number.

If it says that it cannot open the connection to that server then ask your provider for the right SMTP server and port number or use the one I gave you.
Also be sure that any antivirus protections are off. They sometimes can disable sending E-mails.

Cheers!

Stars,
I did not get anywhere using telnet command prompt but for some strange reason the outgoing mail has started to work again. Bit unsatisfactory for it may happen again. So thanks for all comments, when I get more time I might try to find out what caused it. Cheers, firefrost

FF,

Change the SMTP server to smtp.btinternet.com. mail.btinternet.com works but I have always found smtp... to be more stable

FYI, there are times when your email servers quit working, some isp's more than others. You probably should have contacted your provider to see if the servers were down.

Gary, I'll keep that in mind for the future if required. At the moment both incoming and outgoing servers are 'mail.btinternet.com'
John, I thought that both sending and receiving would have been affected if the fault was at source. I will check next time.
Bigfella, Don't want to re-install just yet, I use 'live essentials on Win 7 but my Wife prefers XP OE. Cheers.

Yeah understood, but I would create a new patition and install another clean version of Windows on it and see if that fixes it. Then you can have both working while you migrate.

Gary, Had problem with sending e mails again, receiving them ok.

Did what you and stars suggested and now working perfectly again, hope it lasts.

I made the outgoing mail server ' smtp.btinternet.com 'and the incoming mail server
'mail.btinternet.com'

I also changed the server box no. to 587.

Will see how it performs in the future. Cheers, going off -Masters Golf.
