Hey i was just thinking today, are there viruses that will over clock you cpu/video card so that they will fry?

Yikes, that would really suck... would be possible too =/. Never heard of any such thing though... only viruses that can kill a hard drive...

im sure its possible, but it couldnt really do to much harm because most videocards and cpus have saftey measures in place to prevent overheating.

i wouldnt be worried about heat, i would be worred about voltages. Since there could be a virus that raises your cpu voltage +1V or something.

well it's doable, there are several motherboards that support OS oc'ing, but they usually require motherboard specific drivers and software, any virus would have to carry the driver data for all possible motherboards, and of those only a handfull support OS oc'ing. The size required for this virus would be pretty big, and hence would lack the portability that makes most virus spread. Also the OS would probably crash well before the cpu died

I think it would have to be a virus with a very specific target, like what has been said it might be possible to do it for a handful of motherboards that support OS overclocking, but your typical computer would likely be unaffected, especially ones that don't have oc'ing abilities anyways
