Over Clocking

I have heard the term "overclocking" a lot and i want to know more about it.
I know some things... i think.
overclocking means making it run faster than it normally would, and if i was to overclock something i would need to buy a better fan wouldn't i? Also when you overclock what things does it affect, such as CPU, RAM, mobo or whatever.

Another question i want to ask is, how do i overclock?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Saying that you would need a better fan isn't always true. You have to remember that if you already have adquate cooling in your case, then overclocking a simple 100 mhz, will rarely show any changes.

In a nutshell.

A CPU has a voltage, multiplier, and clock speed. Take an AMD 64 X2 3600+ as an example

The 3600+ Runs at

1.625(Voltage) = 200(Clock Speed) X 10(Multiplier)

The voltage of the CPU alows the desired amount of power into the CPU. The more power = more heat it gives off.
The clock speed of a CPU is the base speed of the processor.
The multiplier is multiplexes the clock speed to reach a core speed.

If you increase the voltage of the processor, the higher the clock speed can be set at. You can use the multiplier to reach a desired number with the clock speed.

Also note, that you increase the speed of your front side bus (FSB) as you increase you clock speed, which in turn makes memory run at faster speeds and so on.

All of these settings can be set in most motherboard BIOS.

Be very careful when adjusting CPU Voltage and Speed. Do it in very small increments. You can seriously mess up your system by doing this. As a novice, I reccomend reading up on the following tutorials.
