Over heating problem, I think

Ok, so with the help of one of my friends and my girlfriend (both have built multiple computers before) I built my own computer, they oversaw the install of everything so I don't think anything is out of place, it ran fine for about two weeks but now I'm having problems, before I get into that here are the specs:

- GIGABYTE GA-790XTA-UD4 AM3 AMD 790X SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

- Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

-Rosewill RP600V2-S-SL 600W ATX12V v2.01 SLI Ready Power Supply

-G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory

-AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor

-EVGA 01G-P3-1366-TR GeForce GTX 460 SE (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

So, I built this thing and it ran amazingly for a while, and now I'm having problems. If i just do light stuff like surfing the internet it's fine, but lately when I play games (I've been playing Fallout: New Vegas and Bad Company 2 a lot) it will play for a little then the signal to the monitor cuts out, the monitor says no signal, but all the fans are the power supply keep running, I try to turn it off but the power button and the reset button no longer work, the CD drive doesn't work either. The only way I have to turn it of is to hit the switch on the power supply.

I figure it has to be something over heating, so I got a program to watch the temp of everything and as far as I can tell when it shuts down the CPU is usually only around 55C and the graphics card is at about 50C. Had my gf come over and help me re-apply the heatsink with higher quality thermal paste, no luck. Any suggestions or fixes to the problem?

You have the same power supply as I do, which would be first thing I would try. Try a different power supply to test. If it still acts like that then try different memory or possible motheboard issue.
 
The fact it ran fine for a certain amount of time very well pushes me away from PSU unless you think PSU failed/or caused damage?

Sure you can say to me well then what? It ran fine so what is it? MoBo or GPU is my guess. But of course it could be anything. But I doubt PSU.

I would if doing commando mechanics/diagnostics run in safe mode. Try and stress as much as you can. If no problem it is GPU.

All in all more diagnostics need to be done.
 
Yea, I'm kind of leaning away from the PSU being the problem mainly because of the fact that all the fans keep running once the monitor shuts of.

My thoughts were that it is either the CPU or the MoBo mainly because of the fact that everything stops working.

Originally I though it was the graphics card, but as far as my understanding, that wouldn't have any control over the CD drive or the On/off and reset switches.

Very good points. Run in safe mode and see if you can stress and what happens.

Yes the lack of control pushed toward failed MoBo?
