Overclocking a 8800GTX

I'm planning to buy an 8800GTX (I'm in australia so I'm not waiting for the new cards to become available here coz that will take forever) and I was also considering gettong 2 8800GTs in SLI instead but it worked out to be much more expensive after upgrading to an SLI motherboard... its not worth it

Someone mentioned instead of getting 2 8800GTs, to overclock the 8800GTX, would it increase performance much and is it a good thing to do?

I'm also putting in an aftermarket cooling system in and my case (Antec Nine Hundred) has heaps of ventelation

What would you guys suggest? Is it worth doing?

Thanks in advance

Nah, I wouldn't get a GTX for more than 300$. The performance difference between it and the GT is so small it's just not worth it. I would either get the GT, or wait for the new GTS.

as i mentioned before.... i am in australia, no 8800 card is less than $300...

these are my options

512MB 8800GT Zotac / MSI-OC ( i dont know how good these brands are)
for AU $375

or

768MB 8800GTX ASUS (I know that ASUS is a quality brand and i have never had problems with them before)
for AU $687

or i can get

640MB 8800GTS ASUS
for $499

This is one the cheapest place around in Aus for computer parts and I'm only purchasing parts from this place

What is your opinion on 8800GT Zotac / MSI-OC... i dont know these rbands well... are they any good?? Is it possible to overclock this card to get better performance to beat the 8800GTX???

I will be running this on a Gigabyte P35-DS4 motherboard... am I able to overclock using this motherboard???

I'm in Australia too, and yeah MSY is the cheapest place to get computer hardware. I"m going to wait until the 8800GT is available or when the new GTS range are released. The 8800GTX is not worth getting, its more than a year old.

I'm thinking, I've just seen some 8800GTs out on the page and instead of getting the GTX, i'll get an SLI compatable motherboard and just get one GT and then later down the track, after prices go down, I'll look into getting a second GT to run in SLI mode

Thanks for the help

im about to get an 8800 GT, but there is no stock near me.

apart from MSY is there anywhere else you would receommend?
for all parts, not just the 8800GT

in australia fo course

my mate pointed me in the direction of MSY and I haven't found anywhere that can even compare (yet anyway), the GT seems only to be available in Victoria :D so I'm ok but I would say best to wait until MSY starts to stock them in other locations

victoria hey? i might see what i can find there.

im in tasmania, there are so many on the waiting list for a GT at my local store that i doubt i will get one even if they get some in hah

here is the latest MSY parts list,

http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

It lists the 8800GT Zotac / MSI-OC, available at the clayton store In Melbourne. Your other option of course is to wait for the new GTS becomes available but being in australia, who knows when that could be

I now definately agree, after seeing benchmarks of the 8800GT vs the 800GTX, the GT performs pretty much on par with the GTX for half the price, I'm glad MSY finally made the DTs available because I have been waiting for them

itsdirect.com.au has a few GTs in stock.

they are all about $420.

is that expensive for an 8800 GT?

it does seem a bit expensive but then again I'm only comparing that to MSY because its the only place I even bothered to look. Despite the fact that everyone says that no matter what brand you buy, they're pretty much the same, you'd hope the one they're offering is a reliable and very trustworthy brand

compare MSY ($345/$375) to $425.... If you need the card and are willing to spend the money then go for it but if you can avoid it, look around for something cheaper. It's too abd ur in Tasi coz it does make things a bit hard to get sometimes. Keep looking around and have a look what else you can dig up. If you know people in Victoria who could get the GT from MSY for you then I'd say do that, otherwise 425 isnt a HUGE rip off but is a bit expensive

well do you reckon MSY would ship to tassie?

i just emailed them.

ill see if i know anyone in melboure that could get it for me, doubtfull tho.

i love my 8800GTX worth every $540 USD i paid for it :) it may be a year old, but, it still kicks all the other cards ass's i play crysis on high w/ some very high settings at 1440 x 900 and its very playable, lowest fps i get is like 20 in DX10 mode and its bbeeeaauuttiiffullll. :) id say get the 8800GTX, then when u save up some more cash buy another one and sli them since u dont wanna wait for the new cards... its jsut money right? lol

I need this comp ASAP and for what I'm doind the 8800GT will be plenty

I have no idea when the new cards will be available in Australia but I'm just gonna go for 2 8800GTs in SLI

I'll be running them on the ASUS P5N32E-SLI board which from what i've heard is jut a slight step down from the striker extreme with no real performance difference, for just about half the price

Australia is a great place, its just a b*tch that we don't get new technology as quckly

I'm glad its finally got cheaper tho, if you tried to buy a top of the reange computer 3 years ago it was very expensive

It appears to be a lot easier to get parts ont he mainland tho, unlike Tassie lol, no offence Kuzba lol

hahaha yeah i ordered my XFX 8800 GT 512mb yesterday from a mainland site. should come tomorrow.

i love express post :D
