Overclocking a GPU

Does a GPU stay overclocked? I'm asking this because one of the idiots on another site said something about OCing a GPU everytime you start your computer. What about burnouts? Someone else said the GPU's life expectancy decreases fifty percent when you considerably OC a GPU. Any ideas?

No it doesn't stay overclocked, the clock speeds are changed from within the OS (except BIOS flashes, but that's a different story). So yes, they have to be loaded every time Windows starts.

You can have RivaTuner or whichever program save the settings though. So once windows opens it will automatically overclock the card. And no, overclocking itself will not hurt the card, though it will decrease stability. Overvolting might harm it though.

OCing, whether you increase the voltage or not, makes the GPU run hotter, and if you don't have good enough cooling the thing is going to get a little sweaty, which is not good in long run. If you have good airflow and the heatsink of your GFX card isn't a cheapo crap one, you -and your card- should be fine.
