ok so i got a new rig
1gb pc2700 333m (2x256/1x 512)
ati x1800 xt 512mb clocked to 702/751
amd x2 3800 dual core
creative x-fi extreme music
600 watt psu
300 gb seaget barracuda
160 iomega external drive

ok so since i ovewrlcocked the x1800 xt ive been getting 7900-8100 in 3dmark05. i heard that this setup should get between 8000-9000 or more in 3dmark05, is there any way i can boost it a little more? i think i may need new ram 1gb 400 pc3200. but i think my score should be a little higher. any help:confused: ? thanks

You overclocked a $600 video card!! Ok, i dont see the point.

As for your question, I think RAM, would help, if you're that adamant to get the extra points. Personally i wouldnt worry about it, overall thats a nice machine you've got there.

Theres always a point to overclocking, its free power isn't it? Yes, i think the RAM is holding you back I score 8268 with a 7800 GT

ok. But who needs more than 512MB of video memory, when no games right now require even that level of card

Ya but like i said its FREE POWER as in FREE, why not take it and if your benchmarking you want to get the most performance as you can.

Just saying its a hell of a risk to take with such an expensive card, plus oc'ing can shorten the life of hardware, or cause other problems.

Just seems to me like it may have been more worth waiting to do when 512 cards begin to be used to their potential

just because you're card doesnt fry, doesnt mean its not overheating though, you can be running the card at slightly hiring temps, and it will be a factor in its lifetime. That is why cards are set at stock defaults. Now if he has a decent cooling system, with good airflow, he need not worry. But not everyone takes those things into account when the oc.

Thats what i meant when i said don't let it overheat. I didn't mean let it fry. Keep your temps low and you'll be alright.

I understand. Im just trying to get you to conceed, that more heat production, even on a small scale if not handled, is detrimental to the hard drive. It just may take a long time.

not hard drive, i meant video card

Hard drive? Yes maybe a little more heat may kill it faster but it will live way longer than for how long people have parts.

Yes, the way things change so quickly has made this not really much of a problem for most people (most people dont keep their computers more than a couple years, except those who like to resist change). I just like to put things out there anyways. You never whos gonna read these forums and may learn a thing or two.

My friends asked me to go with her when she bought her computer, she says to me "I have $900, i need a tower and monitor and I dont wanna buy another one for like 10 years". I simply laughed.

HAHAHA, ya some people don't know how fast things change, as your walking out of the store then are putting a better computer on the shelves.

ok thanks for the replies, i ahave about 5 fans in my case with good airflow. i just dont have any extra cooling for the x1800 x. i have really good airflow though so should i just clock it back to default speeds?

Simple, Nobody.
You just don't understand that you overclock the speed of the cores, not how much RAM.

its free power isn't it?
Well so long as utilities are included in the rent ;)

Graphics designers. Hehe didnt think someone could come with a legitimate answer to that one eh? :P
