Overclocking Graphics Card

I've been considering overclocking my graphics card, but I'd first like to know how much performance difference it will make? And whether or not it's worth it in your opinion.

It really matters what card it is (I know you just said an 8800GTS), but if it was a lower end card such as a 7300GS, then overclocking wouldn't make much of a difference in performance. However the 8800GTS is a great overclocker, and theres a huge performance gain to be had.

I went from around 9000 to 10650 in 3DMark06 after overclocking it to 660Mhz core and I believe 1980Mhz memory.

Here's where I'm at now, I downloaded Riva Tuner, but I don't want to cause OS instability or damage my graphics card. Can anyone recommend how far I should overclock?

try half the overclock from your current to what omega got, and then work your way up slowly from there, and at a single artifact bring it back down. all in all the chances of damaging your system are slim, save for a shutdown, but that is very minor.

EDIT: sorry just noticed that omega wasnt talking about an 8800 he has a 2900XT sorry

Download ATITool. Run both. Use Rivatuner and increase both speeds by around 5MHz each time. Every... lets say 20MHz, run ATITool's artifact checker. If it passes (with no errors) end the test and continue overclocking it.

Thats good so far, but you can take the core much higher then that. I would run ATI Tool to scan for artifacts and put load on the card. As long as you don't save the settings right away, then the worst that will happen is your screen will freeze up and you will need to restart.

Sorry I should have specified, I was talking about when I oc'd my 8800GTS.

I overclocked my GTs 640mb to 600Mhz amd 1017 memory. Do u think i can go higher ?

Thats a great OC on the memory. The GTS' default clock speeds are 500/800, and as I said earlier I was able to get my 640MB up to 660Mhz core, and 980Mhz memory.
