Overclocking makes performance worse?

I have an ATI Radeon X700 Pro, and when I overclock my card (I have a saved profile in ATI tools), the performance in Call of Duty 2 goes down by around 20 FPS. Without it being overclocked my framerate always stays above 30, but once I overclock it it will go down to 7-20 FPS in the same levels. In other games it makes the frame rate go up. This doesn't make any sense at all, does anyone else get this with Call of Duty 2?

its probably getting too hot and throttling due to the extra work the chip is doing in its over clocked state.

What do you mean it begins to tear?

What are the games that actually go faster when the card is overclocked? For an x700, CoD2 is still a very demanding game, especially if you have AA on and graphics cranked.

Well it wasn't overclocked too much, only from 425 core/432 memory mhz to 465\501mhz. The temperatures were reaching 79 max overclocked, and around 76 max stock. The games that go faster are: FarCry, Quake 4, Battlefield 2, Half life 2, CSS:S, and F.E.A.R. I also have a feeling that Oblivion also runs slower, but I haven't fully tested that yet, I'll get back to you on that. On COD 2 I dont run AA or VSync, but everything else is pretty much maxed at 1024x768.

yea, as long as the heat doesn't get too high it should be fine. overclocking should never slow down a card... but as they said if its getting too hott it could be throttling itself which is not a good thing.
what are the temps like?
