Overclocking problems

My friend and i were trying to overclock his pentium 4 1.8ghz just to get a bit more extra speed. Im very new to overclocking and i've overclocked only one computer...a celeron 400mhz to 500mhz(wow! lol). I don't have much experience but this is what happened i changed the fsb in the bios from, 133 to 166mhz(although i think that might have been the ram) neway i tried rebooting the computer and nothing happened so i took out the battery for the cmos and reset everything and got the computer past the post screen and when it tries to load windows it just freezes. I don't what to do to get it back to its original state can anyone help me plz??

i think you should check the bios. there may be some incorrect settings when you put them to default.

did it display the windows logo, or does it freeze just before then?
 
it starts to load windows like u get the screen where u see windows xp pro and the bar underneath moving accross but when it finishes loading that the cursor pops up and then it freezes
 
no ill try that but it also has some problems getting into the post sometimes it freezes and sometimes it works but ill try booting in safe mode adn tell u how it went
 
im not sure if that is a consequence of the overclocking or not, but maybe check the bios settings are all default values - especially the fsb speed and voltages since you changed them.
 
well i hadn't changed the voltage but i did change the fsb. but when u reset the cmos doesn't it usually set everything in the bios back to default?
 
Did you attempt to reset the BIOS by removing the battery?? LOL. You might have to reflash the BIOS then. They have jumpers that will allow you reset it! Read manuals dude.
 
he doesnt have any manuals and it was the ram turns out the stick was already screwed up he bought it from a second hand store so its all good now...thx guys
