Overclocking Question

After doing some research, I've recently decided experiment with some overclocking.I used the Asus Q-fan tool to bring my CPU fan up to 'performance' mode, which is at about 3000rpm. I use Asus PC probe II to monitor all my temperatures, and before overclocking, they're at:

Mainboard :22-26C
CPU: 30 - 33C

I then used the Asus Turbo V utility to overclock my CPU from stock (3.1GHz) to 3.4GHz.

I carefully watched my temperatures, and after about 5 mins, my CPU temp rose up to about 35C.

I then decided to go a bit further, and moved it up to 3.6GHz.

I left it about 15mins, and the temp is currently 39C (none of these temps are when the CPU is under load).

What i'm wanting to know is, are these temperatures about right?

As far as I know, everything should be safe, as the CPU specification says maximum temp should be 70C.

Basically, I just want clarification that my beloved computer is safe!

And yes, I'm fairly new to all this stuff, but I'm fairly confident that what I've done isn't going to damage my baby... haha

Also, what can I use to test it under load?

Thanks

It's always best to run some kind of test to confirm your overclock is stable. Many people use Prim95, but that new program y-cruncher would probably do quite well for checking stability. On top of that, it'll also cause your cores to heat up and you can keep an eye on your max temps. As long as they stay within a reasonable threshold and the machine is stable, I'd say you have a successful overclock.

Indeed but the 35c is this just looking at the temperature and not stressing the cores?

If so you should notice a huge jump in temps once you max all 4 cores out so keep a eye out for that.

Prime95 has my love though it will fullly stress your system if you can stay under 60c but that is my "safety" temp on my Q6600.

Thanks for your replies.

This morning I was having a fiddle with OC settings using ASUS Turbo V, and the computer randomly rebooted (after a brief blue screen) and then said "BOOTMGR is missing. Press CTRL ALT DEL to reboot", and I was like "AHHHHHH I've messed up my beloved computer". But after my brief moment of panic, I thought it sounded like a missing file, rather than damaged hardware.

I used the windows 7 Cd to repair the system, and now all is fine. As far as I know, I hadn't done anything 'dangerous'. I'd just overclocked it to 3.4GHz (fine) and then when I tried to go to 3.6GHz (which I'd already done the night before) It messed up!

Oh well. I think I'm going to steer clear of overclocking from now on. After all, I'm happy with my PCs performance!

Thanks

If your going to overclock much at all I would suggest getting a good aftermarket CPU cooler.

If your processor is the Phenom II 550BE its unlocked. Drop the software overclocking, use the bios. There are only two setting you need to use. The multiplier and CPU voltage.

Have you tried to unlock the other two cores yet?

I've been looking at some CPU coolers, but I haven't really found one that I like. I mean, obviously the main function of one is the cool the CPU, but I'm one of these people who wants it to look cool as well!

Also my MB has these built-in heat pipes (google image search 'ASUS M4A79T' and you'll see) which I think might get in the way of a larger cooler, so I'm basically looking for a medium sized, 'cool looking', efficient cooler! And preferably one that's not too expensive!

The other two cores? My processor is only dual core, so I have no other cores!

:)

Your Northbridge coolers height is about the same as mine, most coolers will clear it. With a AMD you need to worry about clearing you memory since the slots are so close to the CPU bracket. As long as you dont have the tall memory heat shields it will be fine.

You have a Phenom II X2, they are all quad cores with two cores disabled. Go into your bios and find ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration). Set it to Enable and set the core to All or Auto. Save and exit. If it boots and runs stable, you got a Quad core.

Okay, I've learn something new already! But what if it doesn't run stable?

Can this damage the processor in any way?

And what about cooling? If I'm running two extra cores, will it be okay for now with the heatsink that came with it? (i'm eventually going to upgrade to a better one)

If it doesnt run stable, just go back in the bios and disable the ACC. If it doesnt boot, just reset the bios by the jumper on the board.

No it wont damage the processor.

With it unlocked to a quad on a stock cooler will be fine, just dont overclock it much till you get a better cooler.

I forgot to ask, what counts as 'tall' regarding memory?

I've tried to find the dimensions of mine, but I cant! :(

And about using the reset jumper. Mine has a reset button...is that the same thing?

and will it show in windows as being quad core?

Thanks for all your advice :D

If the shield extends taller then the memory, even if they are you can move them to the other two slots. It will still run in Dual channel, no performance loss.

Yes the reset button will work.

Yes it will show it as a quad in windows.
