so i finally decided to overclock my cpu a little i go into the bios and i can't access the cpu config page....its all greyed out so i was thinking the cpu was locked but i was informed no cpus are locked so it muct be locked on the board anyone know how to unlock it?

Motherboard: ASUS A8S-X (not the best for overclocking i know)
CPU: Venice amd athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 Ghz

if its a prebuilt ie: dell, compaq, gateway or something its locked for good unless you buy a new mobo.
if not you may just have to go from auto to manual on another option before the grey area opens.

Dont know much about SIS chipsets but found this at Asus

AI Overclocking
A unique option in BIOS that enables quick overclocking up to 30% (depends on CPU and RAM). It automatically detects and optimizes every relevant parameter to provide both performance and stability.

A REALLY GOOD SW is CPUCool. I used if A LOT!!! Its free too! Just need to know you Chipset and Mainboard And there you go! It will even tell you how to find it. I guarantee there is no other SW as good as it. You can even OC your HDD. You may say "wha? you can't do that!" but You will quickly change you mind once you see how.

PS. Don't OC you HDD to 1000 (it's a way of updating S.M.A.R.T. at a faster rate)-normally you will have a default of 10 (big difference huh?)

alright some info on whats happened.....this board is very weird....ok i set the jump configuration to "manual" from auto this aloud me to change the cpu frequency default is 200 so i start changing it i put it at 201 first just to test what it does and it made my cpu 2.21 Ghz so i put it up to 205 made it 2.25 Ghz so i figured that was the problem but i put it to 210 and i get an error message when it starts to boot up about windows missing a file put it on 215 and it drops my cpu to 1.5 Ghz and the multiplier from 11 to 7 and i can't manually change the multipliers because that portion is still greyed out so to get it back to 11 i have to reset the bios....im starting to think this board is just a pos when it comes to overclocking

Its an SIS chipset... they really do suck for most anything. Do you need to OC your CPU? the 3500+ isnt that bad, i only have the 3200+ and i dont OC... I just wouldnt worry about it. Either that or get a better board, like mine.

yea its not a bad cpu i was just trying to get the most out of it for the little money i spent on it...i don't NEED to overclock it im not seeing any performance loss in anything i do but was worth a try..thanks for the help guys
