Overclocking the GPU

hey
I just signed up for this forum today and this is already my second thread :)
so I got a question:
if I use an overclocking guide for my specific video card (Gigabyte Nvidia 9800 GTX+ 1GB) is there no danger at all for my video card/computer?
if the fan speed for example is set to the default of 3.08% of it's max speed is there no risk at boosting it up all the way to 100%?
they set it that way for a reason after all right?

the fan speed is just an example. my question is about generally overclocking.

thanks in advance :)

overclocking is never without risks.
nobody can give you any warranties.
but generally if you don't go all out and most of all know what you're doing!

but i wouldn't start by oc'ing your gpu. oc'ing a cpu and/or your memory is usually easier. There are also much more guides you can find to this. I'd start by reading the guide on this forum.

i thought GPU was actually easier... but maybe... i did O/C my 5000 to 3.1 super easy and fast with air cooling... dude just read tutorials, take the time it's worth it... you get better o/c by reading tutorials...

ok then, but does this not affect the life length of the chip?
and thanks

Any overclocking shortens the life of the chip, but you really won't notice anytime soon. It may take a few days, or weeks, or a couple months off its life, but nothing major, afaik.
You could also check out ATiTool. That is what I used to assist me with overclocking my 8800.

LMAO your chip is suppose to last YEARS (lots of emphasis).... a little or alot of o/c won't shorten it enough to affect you

Atitool is old, best program is rivatuner imo(or evga precision if your running nvidia, based off rivatuner).

with the fan speed, you should be fine cranking it up to 100%, but it should move automatically as you play games

for the other chips, move in slow increments as you go up

Try making a custom fan profile on Rivatuner. I have it so my card idles at 56C @ 45% fan speed. When I play games, the fan speed goes up to 80% as it reaches 65C. So now, it's silent when I'm not playing games, and only loud when I'm blasting gunfire :) Plus it helps to keep the temperature of the card more stable.

ok thanks,
unfortunately my video card does not support changing fan speed but I'll just try not to OC unless really needed (like for Crysis)
