Overclocking video cards question

I'm a newbie to overclocking and I am wondering how I should do it? Can anyone please elaborate? Thank you

What brand of Video card. First place I'd check is with your Video card manufacturer to see if they offer any free software for that purpose. My EVGA card - I was able to go to EVGA, register on their site and D/L " Precision "

Which allows you to overclock the Video card by sliding the bars to set your clock speed - fan speed, shader, etc.

So it depends on the brand? I see. So all video cards has specific applications that I could download then use. Does Radeon also has free overclocking application? Thank you

Yes, they use Ati Catalyst Control Center.

ati catalyst control center is probably the easiest overclocking program (although it isn't overclocking specific) out there, at least in my experience. all you have to do is slide the bar and click ok. the testing on it sucks though. it says "pass" on settings well past a passing grade. for checking the overclock i like to use ATITool. it has a great artifact detector that colors the artifacts in yellow so they are easy to see. there are others also, of course. you just have to look around and find some that you like. also, i haven't come across any brand-specific overclocking tools like xfx or asus. has anyone used one that works well?

I used atitool to OC my 8400gs in the GUI so you dont have to flash the bios if your new to it and not confident yet. There is also Riva tuner, which seems to have more options but is really confusing to a newcomer. Plus it doesnt have the artifact scanner. ATITool has one other feature some people like and that is the "find max" buttons. There is one for memory and one for core clock, it will OC the card for you albeit a safe OC but still OC'd. Good luck.
